GALLBERRY (Ilex glabra) a native plant   is also commonly referred to as Inkberry holly, Appalachian tea, gall berry, or the evergreen winterberry. Though it generally grows near swamps and bogs, it can also grow well in sandy wooden locales. Grows 5-10 feet tall and 5-8 feet wide. Multi-branched, broadleaf evergreen shrub in the holly family. Prefers full sun to partial shade and clay or sandy acidic soils near swamps and bogs. Moderate salt tolerant. It is diecious. Flowers attract pollinators and the honey produced by bees is considered outstanding.

Used: as a hedge , windbreak, or privacy screen. Pollinators such as honeybees make a really good honey.

NOTE: this plant is very flammable- it is a native fire adapted species. Therefore, do not plant in the defensible space around your home. (30 feet).
